DIY: Make your own Dream Catcher

April 8, 2015

dreamcatcher

Dream Catchers are not only a beautiful home decor piece-they stem from rich Native American traditions.  The traditional dream catcher was intended to protect the sleeping individual from negative dreams, while letting positive dreams through. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them.  One element of the dream catcher is the loop. The hoop symbolized strength and unity which is held to a high esteem by some Native Americans of North America.

This beautiful piece of art will look stunning in your home, bedroom or even dorm room!

We want to share one of our favorite tutorials that we discovered!  You can find the step-by-step tutorial at Patternrevolution.com.

There are several different ways to make a dream catcher. The basics you will need are:

  1.   Fabric scraps
  2.   Extra trims
  3.   Scissors
  4.   Embroidery floss
  5.   Embroidery needle
  6.   Brass macrame ring (hoop)
  7.   Doily* (These will stretch when you attach them, so make sure it is smaller than your ring.)
  8.   Fabric glue
  9.   Beads and feathers (optional)

Step 1:  Pick out all of your fabric, your doily, and supplies.

Once you have your fabric and detailing picked out you want to wrap your hoop.

Step 2:  Wrap your ring

Pick out one or two of the strips you want to use around the ring.  If you are doing one of the bigger sizes, you will need two to cover the whole thing.

Take your strip and glue it to your ring at an angle.  After it dries, just start wrapping it around the ring.  When you are done, just glue it down.  There is no right or wrong way to do this part.  You can even use other materials instead of fabric.

Step 3:  Putting in your center.

This is probably the hardest step.  Get your doily, embroidery floss, and needle.  I like doing this on a flat surface to start it, but then you can totally just do this step on the couch or chair or whatever.

Place your doily in the center of the ring.  Take your floss and thread in through the needle.  Tie the end of the floss to the ring, but use a knot that you can untie at the end.  Start “sewing” it onto the loop.  This is sort of like a whip stitch.  It is up to you how you want the stitches spaced out.  I like to do it on each petal.

Remember your doily is going to stretch so make sure you pull your floss tight enough!  When you finish it up, there is a little wiggle room so even it out.  At the end, take the part that is tied to the loop and untie it.  After that, tie it to the other end of the string.

Step 4:  Decorate

Take that awesome pile of fabric strips and lace trims, ribbons, etc. and get ready to attach them!  Take a strip and fold it in half.  Loop it around the ring.

Put all your fabric pieces on first.  After you get your fabric strips on, add in your trims and lace.  This is where your creativity will shine through. Add in different laces and ribbons for texture. Once they are all attached, you can cut the fabric pieces at an angle.

Step 5:  Add extras

Now is the time to add the optional beads or feathers!

The Look For Less- Alexander McQueen McQ $795 Beaded Shoulder Dress

March 28, 2015

Known for pushing boundaries and creating avant garde masterpieces, the late Alexander McQueen was a British fashion designer and couturier who worked as chief designer for Givenchy and also founded his own namesake label.  His young contemporary line McQ effortlessly blends his street tough British aesthetic with whimsical pieces, and has prices that range from a few hundred dollars to over $1,000.

When we stumbled across this McQ black embellished shoulder dress, we instantly fell in love:

This stylish little number looks great worn with black pumps, booties, or heels, and pairs well with hosiery on cold nights:

You can purchase this military-inspired Alexander McQueen McQ dress for $795 here:

Celebrities are jumping on the beaded shoulder bandwagon as well– Kristin Cavallari was spotted in a Topshop beaded shoulder dress at an event in Las Vegas. Pairing it with a beaded clutch is the perfect way to play up the shoulder embellishment:

We love how sleek and sophisticated these dresses look–with a bit of a rock star edge!  If you’d like to rock this look but don’t want to spend a fortune, have no fear! Lily Boutique has a great look for less.  The Shoulders Above Embellished Bodycon Dress is only $34:

This fashion-forward dress has a rounded neckline, long sleeves, and a fitted bodycon cut.  Gold stud embellishments decorate the shoulders, adding the perfect extra touch to an otherwise simple shape.  This dress is a great way to get the Alexander McQueen and Kristin Cavallari look.  If you’d prefer to add a little more color to your wardrobe, consider the Shoulders Above Embellished Bodycon Dress in Wine, also $34:

We think this dress is a great option to wear to a party or on a fun night out with friends.  What do you think about shoulder embellishments? Let us know in the comments below!

Vintage Style: Jackie Kennedy’s Oleg Cassini Peach Bow Dress

March 20, 2015

During JFK’s presidency in the 1960s, Jacqueline Kennedy quickly became a style icon, and it was during this time that French-born designer Oleg Cassini was hired to create her original wardrobe. From 1961 to late 1963, Cassini dressed Jackie in many of her signature looks, including wardrobe staples like A-line dresses, pillbox hats, trapeze coats, elegant jewelry, evening gowns, and of course her infamous colorful suits.

One of the reasons Jackie Kennedy’s style struck a chord with so many American women is that the looks were easy to copy and something nearly anyone could pull off. Unlike the fashions of the 1950s that included large circle skirts, tight waists, and petticoats with yards of expensive fabric, the First Lady’s A-line dresses and pillbox hats were something everyday women could emulate–and her style seemed new and fresh in comparison. Rather than opting for over-the-top intricate designs, Kennedy’s look was minimal, modern, and understated–the casually glamorous girl next door.
Jackie Kennedy gained the favor of the American people not only for her elegant style, but also for her tact and social grace. One way this was evident was in how she chose to dress on international trips. While visiting foreign countries, Jackie always dressed according to the cultures and customs of the country she’d be in. By showing respect for other nations and cultures, Kennedy fostered her own sense of style and gained admiration from all over the world.
A prime example of this was on a trip to India in 1962, throughout which Kennedy showed off a more conservative style than what she would normally wear in the United States. One of the most iconic looks from the trip was a peach A-line Oleg Cassini dress with a bow in the front:

This famous dress was widely photographed and featured in Life magazine. It is currently on display at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum:

It’s always interesting to see how a style from decades ago can withstand the test of time, and Jackie Kennedy’s peach bow dress is no exception. The classic A-line cut, bold peach color, and bow are just as pretty today as they were 50 years ago.

If you’re a fan of this classic style and want to recreate the look, Lily Boutique has a similar style called the Lauren Bow Front A-Line Dress:

This dress retails for just $40 at www.lilyboutique.com and features a V neckline and princess seams at the bust. The attached skirt has an A-line cut with subtle pleating–and the bow in the center of the waist adds a playful touch reminiscent of Jackie Kennedy. This dress would look nice paired with wedges or nude pumps– or go full out Jackie-style and wear it with ivory pumps, pearls, and gloves. However you choose to wear it, we think Jackie O would certainly have approved!
